As a retired quantity surveyor, I have now switched concentration from numbers to words by expanding on knowledge first gained by attending a Dame Fiona Kidman creative writing course in 1996. This introduced me to the world of writing and sowed the seeds for my first novel. Phase one of “A Moment’s Silence” was completed with sporadic writing in 2006. However, professional consultant demands on my time (plus some new writing endeavours) stacked that work on the bookshelf until 2013, when I was accepted as an Associate Member of the New Zealand Society of Authors. A Creative New Zealand supported Manuscript Appraisal encouraged a rework of the novel, which has now been critiqued and tweaked twice by a professional manuscript assessor and revised accordingly into a taut crime thriller finally published in July 2016. My time is now tied up with assisting in the administration of the NZSA Central Districts Manawatu Writers’ HUB and recommencing work on a novel shelved in 2013 when A Moment’s Silence first approached publication status.
