Melrose, Bruce

Bruce Melrose is a retired track athlete, a former Wellington 3000m steeplechase and 10,000m champion, Canterbury 3000m steeplechase champion and multiple New Zealand medallist.

He spent two European summers running in track meets and in 1989 represented New Zealand as a 3000m steeplechaser. He raced the IAAF London Grand Prix Meet at Crystal Palace against the best steeplechasers of his generation, in what is now the Diamond League’s Anniversary Games. Bruce has drawn from his running experiences to create the world of John Kelly, the fictional 1500m runner at the centre of his debut novel No Wind.

“Someone said to me write something you know about, so John Kelly got born.” Bruce says. “No Wind is the story I searched for years to find but never found. It dawned on me that I’d have to write the novel I wanted to read, so I did. Once I’d finished, it then became a case of what happens next?”

Born on the Kāpiti Coast, Bruce attended Kāpiti College and Massey University. He lives in Upper Hutt with Ali and their two dogs.
