Description

Illustrated by Polly Whimp

A frog is looking for fresh water. He needs to escape the morepork (owl) one night and he happens to land in a flax bush which is near the freshwater stream where the kokopu lives.

The kokopu is a small slender freshwater fish which lives in New Zealand. It is mainly nocturnal in its habits, but does enjoy eating dragonflies in the daytime. The little fish wonders if the frog is edible. No, says the frog, I am a green slippery jumper.

Story to read to children aged 3 to 7 years. Fanciful tale about a frog talking to a small freshwater fish. The kokopu is the adult form of a whitebait. The two become friends. The features are New Zealand wildlife and fauna, but the story is international in its appeal.
