Why would a dedicated soldier turn his back on his own country and everyone he loves? The story gives a gripping and authoritative account of an ordinary soldier whose life spirals out of control, pushing him almost to breaking point. We follow him on his journey from 1942 until the tense ending in 1945, the journey taking him from North Africa to Nova Scotia, from New York to Scotland, and ultimately to the extreme dangers of the Russian Arctic convoys.
